What is Aeration and why Aerate your lawn?

The need for aerating is often overlooked. As sod ages, the soil underneath becomes very compacted, making it difficult for grass roots to absorb water and nutrients. Aeration involves the removal of small plugs of soil. The holes help break up compacted areas and allow water and air to penetrate to the root zone. This also allows the grass roots to breathe which is important.

Ideally, a well-maintained lawn should be aerated every year. Typically only mature lawns should need aerating. High traffic areas should be done every 2 years while healthier looking lawns should be done every 3-5 years.

It is best to water your lawn 2 days prior to aerating. This allows the plugs of soil to fall out more easily. We also suggest that you should re-seed (over-seed) or fertilize your lawn immediately after the aerating process. (Topdressing is optional)
