TOPDRESSING

What is Topdressing?

Topdressing is the process of adding and spreading a fine layer of soil or mulch over the entire surface of your lawn. This improves the overall soil aeration and drainage of your lawn. It strengthens the root systems-creating a denser lawn where weeds will have less room to grow.

You should topdress your lawn every 1-2 years. The best time of the year for topdressing lawns is in the spring or fall. This allows you to combine topdressing with other practices such as aerating, dethatching and or over-seeding.

Proper steps to topdressing a lawn:

  1. Dethatch your lawn and remove all clippings and debris.
  2. Aerate the lawn.
  3. Apply some grass seed evenly, spread the topdressing over your lawn, to a depth of 1/4 -1/2 inch and lightly brush the soil into the grass.
  4. Over-seed the lawn.
  5. Water lawn daily until grass seed becomes well established.
